Helping Angelenos Mayor Bass Takes Immediate Action to Support Food Assistance Amid Federal Government Shutdown
Mayor Karen Bass is taking immediate action to assist more than 600,000 residents of Los Angeles whose CalFresh benefits may be delayed starting November 1 due to a federal government shutdown. Federal court rulings have compelled the U. S. Department of Agriculture to resume SNAP funding, but delays in distribution could affect many households. To address this, the city will partner with FamilySource Centers to distribute fresh foods and direct available funding to assist eligible households with grocery cards.
Residents relying on food assistance programs are encouraged to continue submitting their Semi-Annual Reports to ensure benefits are issued as soon as funding is restored. The city’s commitment aims to alleviate food insecurity during this challenging time, emphasizing that no one should worry about food access due to external circumstances. Additionally, local organizations like the LA Regional Food Bank and LAUSD are enhancing food assistance efforts, including drive-through pantries and meal services for students. This proactive approach reflects the city’s dedication to protecting vulnerable populations during the federal funding lapse. The initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to ensure food security for all Angelenos.
