Mayor Bass Directs City Departments to Prepare for Expected High Temperatures Later This Week, Augmented Cooling Centers Will Open to Keep Angelenos Safe
The National Weather Service has declared an Extreme Heat Watch for Los Angeles from August 20 to August 23, with temperatures expected to soar to 108°F in the San Fernando Valley. In preparation, Mayor Karen Bass has mobilized city departments to implement safety measures, which include opening augmented cooling centers across the city. These centers will be operational from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM and will provide relief to residents during the heatwave. The cooling centers are designed to be accessible for individuals with disabilities and those with special needs. Additionally, the Los Angeles Fire Department is on alert due to a Fire Weather Watch issued for areas outside the city, emphasizing the need for fire preparedness.
Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit sun exposure, and check on neighbors. The city is coordinating with various departments to ensure readiness for any emergencies that may arise during the extreme heat. To stay updated, residents can sign up for weather alerts through NotifyLA. org.
