Inside Safe Brings More Angelenos Inside From Longstanding Encampment in East Hollywood Ahead of Extreme Heat Warning

Los Angeles, CALocal News

Mayor Karen Bass housed over 20 Angelenos from a longstanding encampment in East Hollywood as an Extreme Heat Warning looms. This initiative is part of her Inside Safe program, which aims to provide essential services to the unhoused, including meals and air conditioning. Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez emphasized the program's effectiveness in connecting individuals to necessary resources. Since Bass took office in December 2022, street homelessness has decreased by 17. 5%, the largest decline over two years since the Point in Time Count began in 2005.

A recent RAND Corporation report indicated a 49% reduction in street homelessness in Hollywood, attributed to the Inside Safe initiative. The program has also conducted multiple operations in Hollywood and continues to monitor these sites. Mayor Bass declared a state of emergency on her first day in office to expedite efforts in tackling homelessness. Her approach includes accelerating the construction of affordable housing and implementing an anti-eviction program to prevent homelessness.
