Empowering the Next Generation Mayor Karen Bass Highlights Completion of Girls Build LA Summer Program

Mayor Karen Bass announced the successful completion of Girls Build LA, a three-week summer program aimed at empowering high school girls in Los Angeles through exposure to aviation careers in construction and engineering. Developed with Los Angeles World Airports, the initiative provided hands-on experiences designed to inspire young women in underrepresented fields. Participants engaged in site visits to major infrastructure projects, workshops on sustainable practices, and mentorship sessions with industry leaders. Mayor Bass stated that the program expands the possibilities for young women, helping them envision roles that shape their city. John Ackerman, CEO of LAWA, noted the program's significance in showcasing diverse opportunities within the construction sector.

Olinda Fabian, a participant, expressed her evolving passion for engineering, crediting the program for her aspiration to succeed in the field. Girls Build LA reflects a broader commitment to equity and early career exposure, aligning with Mayor Bass's vision of investing in future leaders. Since taking office, Mayor Bass’s Office of Economic Opportunity has created new job pipelines for Angelenos.
