Mayor Bass Announces Hundreds of New Street Safety Improvements Near Schools As Students Return To Classrooms
Mayor Karen Bass announced the completion of hundreds of street safety improvements to protect children and families as they head back to school. The City has implemented School Slow Zones with a reduced speed limit of 15 mph at 625 schools, including 343 new segments near 201 schools. Since 2023, the City has installed 469 speed humps or speed tables at 117 schools, with 30 new installations made during the summer break. Additional safety measures include quick-build intersection tightening and "No Right Turn on Red" restrictions at over 75 schools. Nearly 500 crossing guards will support elementary and middle school students in navigating busy corridors.
Bass highlighted the initiative's importance in addressing dangerous driving behaviors that jeopardize young lives. Under her leadership, the City aims to create safer environments for students, aligning with a broader public safety strategy amid declining crime rates. Last week, it was reported that more than 110,000 Angelenos participated in the Summer Night Lights program, showcasing the City’s commitment to community safety.
