Feds OK study of Grays River flooding

Long Beach, WALocal News

The U. S. Congress is anticipated to approve funding for a crucial study focused on flooding in the Grays River Valley, as confirmed by Senator Maria Cantwell and Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez. This initiative is part of the comprehensive Water Resources Development Act of 2024. The study aims to develop solutions to the frequent flooding that plagues lower elevations of the Grays River in Western Wahkiakum County, particularly during winter months when heavy rainfall or snowmelt coincides with high tides, creating hazardous conditions.

A significant flooding incident on December 5, 2023, necessitated rescues by the U. S. Coast Guard, underscoring the critical need for timely interventions. The anticipated funding reflects a proactive approach to environmental management and public safety. By examining the underlying causes and potential resolutions, the study could lead to enhanced flood management strategies, which are vital for protecting local communities and infrastructure.
