Crabbing Delay Extended Through Jan. 15

Long Beach, WALocal News

The Pacific County commercial crab harvest has been delayed until at least January 15, 2024, due to insufficient maturation of crabs. Sampling from the area between Klipsan Beach and the mouth of the Columbia River showed a meat recovery of only 22. 1%, below the Tri-State protocols' required threshold of 23%. This decision, announced by shellfish managers from Washington, Oregon, and California, reflects a commitment to quality seafood. Approximately two-thirds of the sampled crabs were found to be softer than desired by processors, indicating they need more time to mature.

This delay significantly affects the local crabbing industry and businesses reliant on the seasonal harvest. Stakeholders remain hopeful for improved conditions as the season approaches.
