Estate to be balloted over 100m regeneration plan

London, UKLocal News

Wandsworth Council will conduct a ballot this autumn regarding a revised regeneration proposal for the Alton Estate in Roehampton. The new masterplan aims to replace 167 existing homes with 614 new residences, ensuring that 57% are affordable. Labour councillor Aydin Dikerdem highlighted the importance of addressing social deprivation in the area through this ambitious renewal program. The proposal also includes enhanced community facilities, such as a community hub featuring a library and GP surgery, as well as a new shopping parade. A recent viability study estimated that the regeneration effort could incur costs of approximately £100 million.

The previous Conservative administration's plan had proposed demolishing more homes while providing fewer affordable units. If the majority of residents approve the plan in the upcoming ballot, the council intends to submit a planning application by June 2026. This initiative represents a significant shift in local housing policy aimed at improving living conditions in one of England's most deprived areas.
