Warning over TikTok filming by hospital patients
The Society of Radiographers warns that patients filming medical treatments for social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram could pose risks to their privacy and that of NHS staff. During the trade union's annual conference, members reported increased instances of patients recording procedures without consent, which can distract healthcare professionals and create anxiety. Ashley d'Aquino, a therapeutic radiographer, shared her experience of being filmed while trying to focus on patient care. NHS staff often wear identifiable badges, potentially exposing their personal information in publicly shared videos. The union is pressing for NHS trusts to develop clear policies prohibiting unauthorized filming to uphold patient confidentiality.
Dean Rogers, the SoR's strategy director, stated that existing policies should be standardized across all trusts for better protection. Prof. Meghana Pandit of NHS England emphasized that any recording should be discussed with staff and used solely for personal purposes. Such measures are vital to safeguard the privacy of all patients receiving care in NHS facilities.
