Day boat company can sell alcohol to customers

London, UKLocal News

Westminster City Council granted GoBoat permission to sell beer and wine on its guided canal cruises, despite community concerns about potential disturbances. Customers can purchase up to two cans of beer or one bottle of wine for shared consumption during their trips, which run daily from 09:00 to 22:00. Residents voiced fears of increased antisocial behavior, referencing previous incidents of public nudity and harassment. Co-founder Julian Wootton assured the council that the new luxury service aims for a well-managed experience, with bag checks for customers before boarding. The council's approval included stipulations, such as installing CCTV and prohibiting the sale of spirits.

GoBoat had previously ceased alcohol consumption on its self-driving boats following local protests. The company seeks to balance offering a pleasant experience while addressing the community's safety concerns. This move highlights the ongoing tension between business interests and local residents in urban environments.
