Robot pets help care home dementia patients

London, UKLocal News

Kallar Lodge, Barking and Dagenham's only remaining council-run care home, has implemented robot pets and digital translators to enhance the lives of its 43 dementia residents. The robot dogs and cats have significantly reduced distress, enabling non-verbal and dysphasic residents to form emotional connections. Staff members observe that these interactions help residents stay engaged and visibly happier. Additionally, digital translators have been crucial in bridging communication gaps for residents who do not speak English, thereby addressing social isolation. Manager Pauline Humphrey emphasized that the technology boosts self-esteem and facilitates participation in group activities.

This initiative is part of Barking and Dagenham Council's new care technology service launched with Alcove in September 2023. The integration of such technology is vital in modern care practices, aiming to improve the quality of life for those with dementia. Kallar Lodge's efforts reflect a growing trend in the use of innovative tools to enhance elderly care.
