'Ding ding' sound returns to reduce bus injuries

London, UKLocal News

Transport for London (TfL) is testing the nostalgic 'ding ding' sound from the original Routemaster bus to enhance passenger safety. This sound serves as a reminder for customers to hold on while the bus departs, addressing the significant issue of slips and falls, which account for 71% of bus-related injuries. The trial commenced last week on route 183 and is currently taking place on route 94, with teams on board to gather passenger feedback. Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance, emphasized the Routemaster's iconic status and the recognition of its sound among Londoners. The trial aims to evaluate whether the sound effectively prompts passengers to secure themselves while the bus moves.

TfL hopes that the implementation of this sound will reduce injuries, particularly for older customers who may have fond memories of it. Results from the trial will be analyzed to determine the next steps in improving safety measures on buses. This initiative reflects TfL's commitment to enhancing the passenger experience and ensuring safer travel.
