London Fire Brigade Six well-being dogs welcomed

London, UKLocal News

The London Fire Brigade has introduced six newly trained wellbeing dogs to help firefighters manage trauma from emergency calls. Staff volunteers bring their pets to provide emotional support across 102 fire stations in London. Borough commander Lucy MacLeod, who works with her dog Blue, stated that dogs can create a calming atmosphere and offer a non-judgmental presence. To qualify, handlers and their dogs completed a rigorous training program, including 20 modules and mental health first aid. This initiative aims to enhance support for firefighters, bridging the gap between immediate peer assistance and formal trauma therapy.

The brigade hopes to recruit additional dogs and handlers, ultimately having a total of 10 teams. Evidence suggests that therapy animals can significantly improve mental health outcomes for first responders. The initiative underscores the importance of mental wellbeing in high-stress professions like firefighting.
