West End cinema listed as asset of community value

London, UKLocal News

The Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square has been designated an asset of community value by Westminster City Council, allowing locals to bid for the venue if it goes on sale. This recognition arrives as the cinema confronts its landlord's plans to raise rent ahead of the lease's September expiration. The cinema has garnered significant community support, with over 160,000 people signing a petition to preserve it. Renowned directors, including Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson, have praised the venue for its dedication to quality films. Although the ACV listing imposes a six-month moratorium on any sale, it does not require the landlord to sell or continue the current lease.

The cinema expressed that while the recognition is an honor, the ongoing fight for a long-term lease remains crucial for its future. The venue's management emphasized the importance of community support in their efforts. A successful outcome would enable the cinema to invest in its development and continue serving the local film-loving audience.
