Man arrested after woman 'slammed' to ground

London, UKLocal News

A 38-year-old man from Whitechapel was arrested on suspicion of common assault after allegedly slamming a woman to the ground on an east London canal path. Ayla Mellek, 20, described the incident occurring on May 4, when a man forcefully ran into her, causing her to fall despite having space to pass. Afterward, she posted a TikTok video to raise awareness, receiving numerous comments from women sharing their own alarming experiences. The Metropolitan Police are also investigating a second incident involving a 60-year-old man, who was pushed and fell into a parked car on April 2. Acting Det Ch Supt Brittany Clarke noted the community's concerns and assured increased patrols in the area.

Mellek voiced her worry that minor assaults could escalate, questioning why women must endure such risks. She highlighted the need for vigilance among women in London. The police encourage anyone with relevant information to contact them.
