Book swap to return to some Tube stations
Transport for London (TfL) will restore its Book Swaps program at 15 surface-level Tube stations next month, following a suspension due to fire safety concerns. The London Fire Brigade had previously raised alarms about combustible materials, leading to an immediate ban on the initiative. In response, TfL collaborated with the brigade to develop fire-proof cabinets that comply with safety standards. These cabinets will be introduced at stations including High Barnet, Acton Town, and Hammersmith, among others. TfL's commissioner, Andy Lord, noted the significance of community book swaps for customers, reinforcing the commitment to safety.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan welcomed the decision, expressing a desire to find solutions for sub-surface stations as well. The Fire Precautions Regulations mandate that station premises remain clear of combustible refuse, highlighting the importance of fire safety in public spaces. The collaborative efforts aim to balance community engagement with the necessary safety measures.
