Mayor must help boys avoid misogyny epidemic - London Assembly

London, UKLocal News

The London Assembly's committee on police and crime has urged Mayor Sadiq Khan to advocate for positive male role models to combat the growing misogyny boys face online. This recommendation, detailed in a recent report, arises from concerns about harmful content disseminated by influencers. The committee's report followed the Netflix drama "Adolescence," which portrayed a boy becoming radicalized by misogynistic messages. Susan Hall AM, the committee's chair, stressed the need for preventative education to combat violence against women and girls, emphasizing the role of parents in guiding their children. The committee proposed a Parent Toolkit to assist families in discussing healthy relationships with their children.

A 2021 Ofcom review revealed that 90% of girls and 50% of boys reported receiving unwanted explicit content in schools. The mayor's initiatives, such as the "Say Maaate To A Mate" campaign, aim to empower boys and men to challenge sexism in society. The report highlights a critical need for awareness and education to address these pressing social issues.
