Children's plaques vandalised in Muslim graveyard
Hertfordshire Police are currently investigating a distressing case of vandalism at Carpenders Park Lawn Cemetery in Watford, where 85 graves, primarily in the Muslim section, were desecrated. Many of the damaged graves are believed to be those of babies and young children, prompting deep sorrow from local funeral service Wadi Funeralcare, which condemned the "unspeakable acts of disrespect. " The police are increasing patrols in the area and are seeking assistance from witnesses to help identify those responsible. Insp Will Rogers-Overy emphasized the importance of community collaboration, stating that senior officers are working closely with local leaders to support affected families. Brent Council leader Muhammed Butt expressed his heartbreak at the incident, labeling it a possible Islamophobic hate crime.
Local Conservative councillor Abbas Merali described the vandalism as a "barbaric act" that has caused extensive anguish. Wadi Funeralcare reported that they were alerted to the vandalism by a bereaved family who recently buried a loved one there.
