Kingston Arcade with alcohol licence to take over Wilko building

London, UKLocal News

Kingston Council has officially approved the conversion of the former Wilko store into a games arcade, marking a significant shift in the town's entertainment offerings. Operated by FunBox Ltd, the arcade will feature a variety of games, including bowling, snooker, and virtual reality experiences, alongside a food and alcohol service available until late hours. This development follows the closure of Wilko in August 2023, which had previously paused housing plans for the upper floors of the building. Those housing plans are now set to proceed, with a proposal to add three additional storeys for 56 new flats, including four affordable homes. Furthermore, plans for the neighboring PRZYM nightclub aim to create a "party bar" to cater to late-night crowds, enhancing the area's nightlife.

The council's decisions reflect an adaptive approach to urban development, focusing on leisure and housing in response to changing retail dynamics. This revitalization effort is expected to attract both residents and visitors, contributing to the overall vibrancy of Kingston town center. The arcade and housing developments are part of a broader strategy to enhance local amenities and support community engagement.
