Cycling journeys up by 43 in London, report finds
Cycling journeys in London increased by 43% over six years, reaching 1. 5 million daily trips, as reported by Transport for London. The report reveals a rise from 1. 05 million journeys in 2019 to 1. 33 million in 2024.
Safety concerns persist, with only 40% of cyclists on roads without bike paths feeling secure, compared to 76% on dedicated routes. Will Norman, the mayor's walking and cycling commissioner, stated that London is "fast becoming a cycling city," but emphasized the need for continued efforts. Currently, about one-third of cycling occurs on cycleways, which represent only 2. 5% of the total road network. The report also highlights that the number of people killed or seriously injured on London’s roads has remained stable, with 3,707 incidents reported in 2024.
Of these, 81% involved pedestrians, cyclists, or motorcyclists. The mayor has pledged to eliminate all fatalities and serious injuries from the streets by 2041, reflecting a commitment to enhancing road safety.
