Bromley Council urged to restore Hawes Lane speed humps
In West Wickham, south London, residents are fighting to reinstate speed humps on Hawes Lane, which were removed during road resurfacing last year. They argue that the smooth surface has led to dangerous speeding, with some drivers reportedly reaching 50 mph. The petition "Make Hawes Lane Safe Again" has attracted over 600 signatures, reflecting local concerns about safety. Bromley Council maintains that the removal of speed humps saves taxpayer money and claims that assertions of high speeds are exaggerated. Local resident Andrew Rogers highlighted the dangers for children, suggesting that potholes would have slowed drivers down.
Council member Nicholas Bennett defended the council's stance, stating that parked cars act as a natural speed deterrent. Residents are now exploring alternative traffic-calming solutions, such as speed indicator devices. They remain committed to advocating for safer road conditions in their community.
