Tributes paid after death of Holocaust survivor
Vera Schaufeld, a notable Holocaust survivor, has died at 95, receiving widespread tributes for her courage and contributions to Holocaust education. The Association of Jewish Refugees hailed her as an "extraordinary ambassador" whose work inspired many. Born in Prague in 1930, she was separated from her parents at nine due to the Nazi invasion, ultimately fleeing to England on the Kindertransport. Her parents were later murdered in a concentration camp, deepening her commitment to remembrance. After the war, Schaufeld trained as a teacher and shared her testimony in schools, significantly impacting students’ understanding of the Holocaust.
Michael Newman, chief executive of the AJR, highlighted her eloquent storytelling that brought the Kindertransport's human dimension to life. In 2019, she was awarded an MBE for her services to Holocaust remembrance and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Roehampton. Her legacy will inspire future generations to remember and educate about the Holocaust.
