Strangers mocked me in my wheelchair for 'tongue out' trend on TikTok. Nobody intervened
A disabled man reported harassment at London's Finsbury Park station when individuals mocked him for a TikTok prank, which involves sticking out one's tongue at unsuspecting strangers. He described the incident as a hate crime, expressing frustration over the lack of intervention from bystanders. The British Transport Police recognized his experience as part of a troubling trend of harassment linked to social media. Ciaran O'Connor from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue explained that social media algorithms often promote content that incites anger and confrontation, leading to real-world consequences for marginalized groups. TikTok maintains that the majority of content related to the trend does not violate its guidelines against hate speech.
Nonetheless, the incident highlights the potential for viral trends to be weaponized against disabled individuals and other minorities. The man’s previous experience with TikTok-inspired harassment further emphasizes the need for societal change regarding attitudes toward disability. Increased awareness and proactive measures are essential to combat this growing issue.
