No DLR extension will be 'missed opportunity'
Developers aim to construct 15,000 homes at Thamesmead Waterfront, but the project hinges on extending the Docklands Light Railway (DLR). The proposed £1. 7 billion extension would connect Thamesmead to central London, cutting travel time to the West End to around 35 minutes. Local leaders, including Jonathan Seager of BusinessLDN, stress that the DLR extension is vital for both housing and economic growth. The New Towns Taskforce recently recommended Thamesmead as a site for a new town, emphasizing that the DLR extension is a prerequisite for success.
Greenwich Council's Majid Rahman echoed these sentiments, highlighting the area's significant brownfield potential. Developers like Ed Mayes from Lendlease warn that without public transport access, high-density housing cannot be realized. The government aims to build 1. 5 million new homes by 2029, making Thamesmead's development a crucial component of this goal. However, without confirmed funding for the DLR, the ambitious plans could falter.
