Battle to protect 300-year-old pub

London, UKLocal News

North London residents have rallied to save the historic Black Horse Pub, which closed in September, by signing a petition urging Barnet Council to grant it "asset of community value" (ACV) status. Founded in 1720, the pub's future is uncertain as its owner, Star Pubs, seeks a new operator following the departure of the last leaseholder. Local leaders express concerns that without ACV status, the pub could be sold for redevelopment. High Barnet councillor Emma Whysall noted that ACV status can help preserve community spaces, citing past successes like Tudor Hall. The petition has attracted over 2,300 signatures, with local resident Olly Gough calling for more community stories to support the application.

The council has yet to receive an ACV application for the Black Horse and stated that the formal process will begin once submitted. The government is also working on legislation to extend the timeframe for community groups to raise funds for such purchases. This situation reflects broader concerns about the preservation of local heritage in the face of redevelopment pressures.
