Firefighter rescues children on fourth day in job
On October 28, rookie firefighter Zekel Johnson rescued three children from a flat fire in Croydon, London, just four days after starting his job. The fire erupted following an explosion of a lithium-ion battery from an e-bike stored in the hallway. Johnson, demonstrating remarkable courage, climbed a 13. 5-meter ladder to save the children while also assisting four adults down safely. Naveen Narayanasankar, a resident, recalled the terrifying moment when smoke filled the flat and they sought help at the window.
London's Fire Brigade commended Johnson for his assured and calm response during the high-pressure situation. Firefighters described the blaze as "intense" and unlike any conditions they had previously faced. Thankfully, all residents assessed on-site by the London Ambulance Service did not require hospitalization. This incident highlights the dangers associated with lithium-ion batteries, particularly in residential areas.
