Man denies murdering pensioner in street robbery
Peter Augustine, 59, denied charges of robbery and murder in the death of 87-year-old John Mackey, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a street robbery in north London. Prosecutor Jayne Bickerstaff KC detailed that Mackey, who had mobility challenges and lived alone, was shopping when he was attacked on May 6, 2025. The prosecution asserts that Augustine followed Mackey and assaulted him, resulting in fatal head injuries. Witnesses reported seeing Mackey on the ground being kicked, and CCTV footage showed Augustine carrying what appeared to be Mackey's bag shortly after the incident. Augustine interrupted the proceedings, insisting he did not harm Mackey but only took his bag.
Doctors found that Mackey suffered from bleeding on the brain, compounded by existing health issues, including Alzheimer's disease. The case highlights the vulnerability of elderly individuals in urban settings and raises concerns about street crime. The trial is ongoing as jurors await further evidence regarding the circumstances of Mackey's death.
