'I promised my dad now I've got a PhD at 69'
Dr. Needyanand Raya, now 69, fulfilled a lifelong ambition by earning his PhD in social policy at Middlesex University, a promise made to his father over two decades ago. Arriving in the UK from Mauritius in 1999, he initially faced limited opportunities, working low-paid jobs while supporting his family. He later found his footing in forensic mental health but always aspired to return to academia. His doctoral research focuses on the post-colonial experiences of the Mauritian Creole community, highlighting the impact of colonization on identity and culture.
Eleonore Kofman, his PhD supervisor, commended his determination and the importance of his research topic. Dr. Raya's journey underscores the challenges faced by immigrants with hidden qualifications. He expressed pride in keeping his promise to his father, stating, "Dad, I made you feel proud. " His ongoing research aims to deepen understanding of cultural identity.
