Royal Observatory Greenwich begins 77m renovation

The Royal Observatory in Greenwich has commenced a £77 million renovation to improve access and create new educational spaces. A lift tower will be constructed to provide easier access to the Great Equatorial Telescope, which is currently only reachable via a spiral staircase. The project includes four interactive astronomy galleries and a covered courtyard for live science events, with completion expected by spring 2028. Paddy Rodgers, director of the Royal Museums Greenwich, emphasized the project's goal to enhance public understanding of astronomy and inspire curiosity in visitors. The transformation is funded through the Observatory's reserves, government support, and external donations, including £9.

7 million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund awarded on October 7. A new entrance pavilion will guide visitors from Greenwich Park into the Observatory, which is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Great Equatorial Telescope, located in the Observatory's iconic onion dome, is the centerpiece of the renovation. The Peter Harrison Planetarium will remain closed during construction to facilitate the project.
