Scheme to cut water bills for low income homes
Thames Water launched a WaterHelp scheme to cut water bills by 50% for low-income households in 17 London boroughs, automatically enrolling eligible residents. This initiative leverages data-sharing agreements with local councils and the Policy in Practice platform to identify households that spend over 5% of their net income on water bills. Following a successful pilot in Wandsworth and Richmond, which aided 1,800 households with £650,000 in financial support, the company expects the scheme to benefit around 33,000 families, saving over £10 million annually. Nina White, director of income at Thames Water, stated that the company aims to support customers facing financial hardship. Additionally, Thames Water is working to identify customers eligible for its WaterSure tariff and an extra support scheme offering up to £700.
The launch of this initiative is critical as the company grapples with significant debts and the risk of nationalization. An independent review earlier this year warned that water bills may need to rise by 30% by 2030 due to years of under-investment. This program represents a proactive step to assist vulnerable residents amid rising economic pressures.
