Met police officer faces criminal probe after BBC investigation

London, UKLocal News

A Met Police constable faces a criminal investigation on suspicion of perverting the course of justice following a BBC investigation into misconduct at a central London police station. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating 11 individuals, including nine serving officers, for allegations of excessive force and discriminatory comments. The IOPC announced that one case has been dropped, but others are being treated as potential gross misconduct. Investigators have secured significant CCTV footage from the station's custody suite and are reaching out to the public for accounts related to the incidents. The Met Police has suspended eight officers and one staff member in light of the findings.

IOPC director Amanda Rowe stated that the investigation is being treated with utmost seriousness, with a dedicated team working to review the evidence. The allegations date back to incidents occurring between August 2024 and January 2025. This investigation follows a previous IOPC report in 2022 that uncovered "disgraceful" behavior, including a homophobic and misogynistic WhatsApp group among officers at the same station.
