Lollipop man, 83, not allowed to keep uniform
Robert Boyce, an 83-year-old lollipop man, was told by Croydon Council that he cannot keep his uniform after being made redundant. He dedicated over 20 years to ensuring the safety of children crossing the road near Cypress Primary School in South Norwood. Boyce expressed a desire to retain his high-visibility coat for sentimental reasons, stating, "I'd like to hold on to it for the memories. " The council maintains that uniforms are kept for safeguarding reasons upon staff departure. As the new school term began, local families showed their affection for Boyce, with many stopping to greet him at the crossing.
Labour mayoral candidate Rowenna Davis wrote to the mayor, advocating for Boyce and others to keep their uniforms, highlighting their community significance. Croydon Council acknowledged Boyce's contributions but reiterated its policy on uniform retention. Road crossing safety is a non-statutory service, which means the council is not legally required to provide it.
