Less serious violence at Notting Hill Carnival this year, say police
The Metropolitan Police reported a notable decline in serious incidents during this year's Notting Hill Carnival, with 423 arrests and only two stabbings that did not lead to serious injuries. In contrast, last year's carnival resulted in eight stabbings and two deaths. On the day of the adult parade, police arrested 223 individuals, primarily for cannabis possession, possession of offensive weapons, and drug supply. The police implemented live facial recognition technology and other security measures to prevent violence, which drew criticism from civil liberties organizations. Met Assistant Commissioner Matt Ward emphasized the proactive approach taken against those intending to harm others.
Critics argue that the technology constitutes mass surveillance and is less accurate for women and people of color. Despite these concerns, the Met maintains that the technology is effective and balanced. The event's security measures reflect a broader commitment to ensuring public safety at large cultural gatherings.
