Hopes for tribute for basketballer crash victim
The Argyle Kings are working to renovate Argyle Square court in north London and create a memorial for Anthony 'TJ' Hibbert, who tragically died in a car crash at age 24. Hibbert, a local talent, played at the court during his youth and was recognized by the University of Essex for his basketball skills. The group has identified funding and received backing from Basketball England, which noted the court is in dire need of renovation. Camden Council stated its eagerness to collaborate, although some community advocates expressed dissatisfaction with the council's lack of responsiveness. Ray Akpofure, who has led the renovation efforts, recalled Hibbert's positive impact on the community and noted that the court was once the "mecca of grassroots basketball.
" The Argyle Kings also have support from the not-for-profit Hoopsfix Foundation and social media influencers advocating for the court's condition. The project aims to create a vibrant outdoor space while honoring Hibbert's legacy. Community leaders continue to push for swift action from Camden Council to move forward with the plans.
