Chiltern Railways unveils new train carriages
Chiltern Railways has announced it will replace its nearly 50-year-old Mark 3 carriages with 13 new Mark 5A trains starting in spring 2026. The updated fleet will include features such as charging ports at every seat, enhanced wi-fi, digital customer information screens, and onboard air conditioning, significantly improving the travel experience. Managing Director Richard Allan stated that the company is excited to offer a modern alternative to its aging trains, which will help meet increased passenger demand. The newer trains will also be powered by recycled vegetable oil, contributing to reduced emissions. MP Sean Woodcock expressed delight over the announcement, as the quality of Chiltern trains had been a frequent complaint from constituents.
Rail Minister Lord Hendy noted that this investment reflects a government commitment to putting passengers at the forefront of the railway system. Chiltern Railways operates services connecting London and Birmingham, serving towns across several counties. The upgrade aims to transform customer journeys and stimulate regional growth in the areas served.
