Man killed on Tube track during police search

London, UKLocal News

Robert English, 32, was electrocuted and later struck by a Tube train while evading police near Colindale station in May 2024. The inquest revealed that Transport for London's (TfL) response was inadequate, as staff restored power after mistakenly believing English had exited the area. Senior coroner Andrew Walker highlighted that the search train lacked proper equipment for nighttime operations, which compounded the danger. Walker criticized TfL for failing to inform all relevant personnel about the power restoration, stating that had this step been followed, the tragic incident could have been avoided. English's last sighting was around 01:00 BST, and he was found 500 meters from the station.

TfL's chief operating officer, Claire Mann, expressed commitment to reviewing operational protocols and collaborating with police to prevent future incidents. The police watchdog determined that no further investigation was necessary following the coroner's report. The Department for Transport is also considering the coroner's recommendations for future safety measures.
