Plans to expand Wimbledon can go ahead, judge rules

London, UKLocal News

A High Court judge dismissed a legal challenge from Save Wimbledon Park (SWP), allowing plans to expand the Wimbledon tennis site to proceed. The Greater London Authority approved the proposal for 38 new tennis courts and an 8,000-seat stadium on land once belonging to Wimbledon Park Golf Club. SWP argued that the development was unlawful due to the protected status of the land, which is a Grade II*-listed heritage site. The court found the planning decision to be a rational exercise, with Mr. Justice Saini stating that relevant factors were considered appropriately.

Despite the ruling, SWP indicated it may seek further legal action, believing the GLA made a significant legal error regarding the park's status. The expansion aims to provide 27 acres of newly accessible parkland for the community, as stated by Deborah Jevans, chairwoman of the All England Club. The plans also include maintenance buildings and facilities to host Wimbledon qualifiers on-site. A separate High Court case regarding the statutory trust related to the land is scheduled for January 2026.
