Swimmer reunited with lifeguard who saved her life

London, UKLocal News

Joanna Hicks, rescued from drowning at Newgale Beach in Pembrokeshire, reunited with RNLI lifeguard Matty Mcleod, who saved her life in 2023. Caught in a rip current, Hicks was unresponsive when Mcleod found her and held her hand until help arrived. After spending ten days in intensive care at Glangwili Hospital, she expressed gratitude for her lifesaver during their reunion. Mcleod described the moment as "really amazing," highlighting the emotional impact of their meeting. The RNLI warned that drowning risks increase fivefold in warmer weather, with July seeing a spike in fatalities.

Hicks, an experienced swimmer, acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the sea after her near-fatal experience. Mcleod, who responded quickly after receiving the emergency call, described searching for her as "like looking for a needle in a haystack. " The RNLI continues to encourage swimming at beaches with lifeguards to enhance safety.
