Suzy Lamplugh suspect refused treatment in prison

London, UKCrime

John Cannan, who was serving a life sentence for the murder of Shirley Banks and was suspected in the 1986 disappearance of Suzy Lamplugh, died of natural causes in HMP Full Sutton on November 6. Cannan, 70, refused medical treatment for serious health issues, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, despite being warned of the risks. An inquest revealed he had the mental capacity to make decisions regarding his healthcare, and no suspicious circumstances were found surrounding his death. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman noted a delay in emergency response due to a locked gate, but stated it did not affect the outcome. Cannan had been labeled a category A prisoner and was denied parole in October 2023 due to his dangerousness.

His refusal to engage in rehabilitation programs while in prison raised concerns about his potential for reoffending. The Lamplugh family expressed sorrow over the lack of closure following his death, with Richard Lamplugh stating he mourned the loss of answers about his sister's fate. Cannan was linked to Lamplugh through a police e-fit and had a nickname similar to the mysterious “Mr Kipper,” whom she was last seen with.
