Dagenham wildfire and two other grass fires under investigation

London, UKLocal News

Three wildfires erupted in east London on Monday evening, leading to a significant response from over 200 firefighters. The largest blaze, which occurred in Dagenham, burned eight hectares and came dangerously close to residential homes, prompting temporary evacuations. Firefighters employed jets and wildfire beaters to combat the flames, which also affected areas near Hornchurch and Walthamstow Marshes. Station commander Matt Hayward emphasized the importance of fire breaks in preventing the fire from spreading further. The London Fire Brigade warned that the ongoing warm and dry weather could present continued challenges this summer.

Enhanced wildfire response training has been implemented for all firefighters in preparation for anticipated incidents. Residents are advised to act responsibly and avoid using disposable barbecues in parks and near homes. The brigade's spokesperson highlighted the rapid spread of fires in urban areas due to their proximity to green spaces.
