Met uses new tech to record bruising on dark skin
The Metropolitan Police is set to roll out a new device that enhances the visibility of bruises on dark skin, facilitating the prosecution of violent offenders. A pilot program in south London demonstrated its effectiveness, with charges filed in 45% of cases where the technology was applied. Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley noted that the device helps police see injuries that are often invisible to the naked eye, particularly on darker skin tones. Sistah Space, a charity supporting women of African and Caribbean heritage, expressed cautious optimism about the technology but raised concerns regarding insufficient community involvement in its development. CEO Ngozi Fulani remarked, "It was about us but without us," highlighting the need for better engagement with the black community.
The Met Police countered by stating it consulted a range of community representatives during the development process. The use of this technology could mark a significant shift in addressing violence against women and girls. The initiative reflects broader efforts to improve evidence collection and consequently enhance prosecution rates for violent crimes.
