London 2012 tennis courts to make way for padel
The Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre plans to convert four indoor tennis courts into nine padel courts, a move that has sparked outrage among local tennis players. Shawn Dawson, head of the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, insists that adapting to sports trends is essential for keeping the Olympic venue relevant. The Lawn Tennis Association argues that the existing tennis facilities are vital, serving over 100,000 players annually and supporting numerous community programs. Local tennis player Kimberly Schreiber criticized the decision for lacking public consultation, while wheelchair user Ivan Vershigora lamented the loss of indoor tennis, particularly during winter. A petition against the conversion has garnered over 1,500 signatures, highlighting community discontent.
Dawson maintains that the change will benefit more people by diversifying the sports offered at the center. The venue will still provide six outdoor tennis courts, which will not be affected by the changes. As the popularity of padel rises, the future of indoor tennis at this facility remains uncertain.
