Concerns over Notting Hill Carnival steward funds
Concerns about safety at the Notting Hill Carnival have intensified as police officials express worries over insufficient funding for extra stewards. Simon Hill of the Metropolitan Police Federation highlighted that none of the front-line officers he spoke to looked forward to working at the event, fearing potential crowd-related incidents. Carnival chairman Ian Comfort has requested government funding to bolster safety measures. A report by Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley stated that the lack of funding for additional stewards could hinder effective crowd management. The cost of policing the 2023 Carnival reached £11.
7 million, with an average of 60 officers injured annually. Hill mentioned that the event is marred by a "handful of criminals" who disrupt the vibrant atmosphere. Last year, two murders occurred at the carnival, raising alarm about safety. The police emphasize that better resources for event management could reduce crime and protect officers.
