Public tour highlights forest health and wildfire risk reduction work around Lake Wenatchee
On May 29, local agencies hosted a tour showcasing forest restoration and wildfire risk reduction initiatives near Lake Wenatchee. The Upper Wenatchee Pilot Project encompasses 76,000 acres and aims to enhance forest health through commercial thinning, prescribed fire, and road work. Community members learned about the project’s origins and long-term goals from U. S. Forest Service representatives and local fire officials, including Jim Passage, who stated, "It's going to reduce the risk of fire in our community.
" Participants also visited the Chiwawa River Pines Community Fuel Break to understand community wildfire protection efforts. Cascadia Conservation District provides various programs, including forest health assistance and home hardening incentives, to support private landowners in fire risk reduction. The collaboration among local agencies is vital for improving forest structure and wildlife habitat while enhancing community safety. The project reflects a growing commitment to proactive forest management and fire risk mitigation in the region. By engaging local residents, the initiative fosters a culture of preparedness and resilience against wildfires.
