Annual Discover Pass cost set to increase in October
The Discover Pass fee in Washington will rise from $30 to $45 beginning October 1, the first increase since the program's launch in 2011. This pass is essential for parking at state parks and lands managed by the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife and the Department of Natural Resources. Governor Bob Ferguson signed the legislation on May 17, following its passage in the Legislature. Although the fee hike aims to address budget shortfalls, officials state it will not significantly increase revenue for the 2025-27 biennium. Approximately 71% of State Parks funding will be derived from earned revenue, a rise from 65%.
The new law also modifies off-road vehicle requirements and adjusts the Lifetime Disabled Veteran's pass. Washington's state parks system, established in 1913, includes 124 developed parks and sees over 40 million visitors each year. Officials emphasize that about 82% of State Parks staff work directly to maintain park operations and visitor satisfaction.
