K9 Officer Kona retires after six years with Lakewood Police Department
K9 Officer Kona has officially retired from the Lakewood Police Department, concluding a distinguished six-year career. She joined the force in 2019 from Slovakia, where she was partnered with Officer Anthony Bucat, who trained her extensively. Together, they completed 400 hours of training, equipping her to assist in suspect apprehension and evidence location. Throughout her service, Kona dedicated an impressive 1,576 hours to training and successfully located 59 individuals for various agencies across Pierce County. Her dedication earned her a certified Master K9 level in her last three years, making her one of the few active female patrol dogs in the state.
Following her retirement, Kona will enjoy quality family time and indulge in her favorite games of fetch, staying with Officer Bucat, who has cared for her since her arrival. Bucat is now preparing to welcome a new K9 partner, Ares, a 12-month-old Dutch Shepherd from the Czech Republic. Congratulations to Kona for her outstanding service, and best wishes for her retirement adventures!
