Waughop Lake treatments successful at reducing toxic algae blooms
The City of Lakewood has achieved a significant milestone in environmental management by successfully treating Waughop Lake to mitigate toxic algae blooms. Historically, the lake struggled with poor water quality due to nutrient-rich sediments and shallow depths, which facilitated harmful cyanobacteria growth. With the implementation of aluminum sulfate treatments, phosphorus concentrations have drastically decreased, preventing toxic blooms since 2020. This method is widely recognized and used in lake management across the country, demonstrating its effectiveness in similar water bodies. The city received a permit from the state Department of Ecology, which mandated comprehensive monitoring and testing, ensuring the treatments' safety and efficacy.
As a result, health advisories that previously restricted water contact have been lifted, marking a significant improvement in the lake's recreational viability. The city’s proactive approach highlights its commitment to environmental stewardship and community health. Ultimately, Waughop Lake now provides a safer environment for outdoor activities, benefiting both residents and local wildlife.
