Work begins soon on South Tacoma Way project - City of Lakewood
On February 28, 2025, a groundbreaking ceremony took place on South Tacoma Way, marking the beginning of a crucial roadway upgrade project in Lakewood, Washington. The event featured Mayor Jason Whalen, Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland, and members of the Lakewood City Council, all celebrating the $2. 5 million in federal funding secured by Strickland for this initiative. The improvements aim to enhance safety and accessibility, connecting Lakewood's northern boundary with Tacoma and benefiting the vibrant local business community. With nearly 85% of businesses in the area being women- or minority-owned, this project is particularly significant for promoting economic growth and diversity.
Mayor Whalen expressed appreciation for Strickland's commitment to the region, emphasizing the project's importance for the surrounding communities. Construction is anticipated to begin shortly after the completion of ongoing watermain upgrades by the Lakewood Water District. The city will keep residents informed about road impacts through its weekly City Manager Bulletin, ensuring transparency and communication. This project represents a vital step toward improving infrastructure and fostering community development in the South Sound area.
