Parks Recreation - City of Lakewood

Lakewood, Washington, is home to over 600 acres of parkland, encompassing 14 parks that support diverse recreational opportunities, including wildlife viewing, sports, and community events. An ongoing project at the Old Settlers Cemetery aims to preserve its pristine prairie ecosystem, with volunteers actively inventorying the natural environment. In a significant cultural move, the city has acquired the historic "Big One," a massive Douglas fir log, which has been relocated to Fort Steilacoom Park, enhancing public access to this treasured artifact. This log has a rich history, being over 586 years old when felled and previously displayed at the Lakewood Library.

The relocation decision considered factors such as regional visibility, accessibility, and existing historical features that can enhance visitor experience. The log's new location is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, reinforcing Lakewood's commitment to preserving its natural and cultural heritage. Future collaborations with the Nisqually Tribe aim to enrich the interpretive experience surrounding the log and its historical significance.
