Ribbon Cutting Communication Boards at Lake Stevens Parks
Lake Stevens will celebrate National Apraxia Awareness Day on May 14, 2025, with the installation of communication boards at three playgrounds to promote inclusivity. Funded by Sherwood Community Services and Lake Stevens Rotary, these boards aim to help individuals with speech disorders like apraxia communicate effectively. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will occur at 4:30 PM at Lundeen Park, where local officials, families, and community members will gather for the event. Mayor Brett Gailey expressed excitement about the installation, emphasizing the city's commitment to inclusivity. The boards will support non-verbal communicators and those who speak different languages, addressing the diverse needs of the community.
Apraxia is a neurological disorder that hinders purposeful movement, affecting speech among other functions. This initiative represents a significant advancement toward accessibility and engagement for all residents. Community members are encouraged to attend the ceremony and raise awareness about apraxia and its impact.
